Barriers to AI Adoption: Image Concerns at Work

Synopsis

Field experiment with 450 US remote workers doing AI-assisted image categorization, where reliance was made visible or not to an HR evaluator. Workers received fewer contract extensions when reliance was visible; the concern persisted even when evaluators had positive prior-performance information. Workers fear heavy AI reliance signals low confidence in their own judgment.
